Doctrine of Christ: Resurrection of the Dead
The Doctrine of Christ – The Resurrection of the Dead
The resurrection of the dead is one of the foundational doctrines of Christ, as mentioned in Hebrews 6:1-2 (NKJV):
“Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.”
This doctrine is central to the Christian faith, emphasizing the hope of eternal life through Jesus Christ. The Bible teaches that both the righteous and the unrighteous will be resurrected—one to eternal life and the other to judgment.
1. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ – The Foundation of Our Faith
The resurrection of Jesus is the cornerstone of Christianity. Without it, our faith would be meaningless.
1 Corinthians 15:17 (NKJV)
“And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins!”Romans 10:9 (NKJV)
“That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”John 11:25-26 (NKJV)
“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?’”
Jesus’ resurrection assures us that death is not the end for those who believe in Him. His victory over the grave guarantees our future resurrection.
2. The Two Resurrections – The Righteous and the Unrighteous
The Bible teaches that there will be two resurrections: one for the righteous unto eternal life and another for the unrighteous unto judgment.
Daniel 12:2 (NKJV)
“And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, Some to everlasting life, Some to shame and everlasting contempt.”John 5:28-29 (NKJV)
“Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.”Acts 24:15 (NKJV)
“I have hope in God, which they themselves also accept, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust.”
The righteous will experience the first resurrection, reigning with Christ, while the unrighteous will face judgment in the second resurrection.
3. The First Resurrection – The Resurrection of Life
The first resurrection is for those who belong to Christ and will occur at His return.
1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 (NKJV)
“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.”Revelation 20:4-6 (NKJV)
“And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ and shall reign with Him a thousand years.”
This resurrection is a reward for the faithful, granting them eternal life with Christ.
4. The Second Resurrection – The Resurrection of Judgment
The second resurrection is for those who have rejected Christ, leading to final judgment.
Revelation 20:12-15 (NKJV)
“And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.”
Those who are not in Christ will face eternal separation from God.
5. The Hope and Assurance of Our Resurrection
Believers have the assurance that they will be resurrected and given glorified bodies like Christ.
Philippians 3:20-21 (NKJV)
“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.”1 Corinthians 15:51-52 (NKJV)
“Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”2 Corinthians 5:1 (NKJV)
“For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.”
The resurrection gives believers confidence that their eternal future is secure in Christ.
6. Call to Action – Are You Ready?
Since resurrection and judgment are inevitable, we must be ready.
Romans 10:13 (NKJV)
“For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”Hebrews 9:27 (NKJV)
“And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.”Matthew 24:44 (NKJV)
“Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
Now is the time to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, ensuring that we partake in the resurrection of life rather than judgment.
Final Thoughts
The resurrection of the dead is a core doctrine that provides both hope and a warning. Those in Christ will rise to eternal life, while those who reject Him will face judgment. Christ has made a way for all to receive eternal life—through faith in Him.
