Where Should I Start?

John 1:1 – In the Beginning Was the Word…

Often, we find ourselves asking God, “Where should I start? Where should I begin, Lord?” If you have prayed this prayer like me, you may have wondered, “How should I start following Jesus? How should I begin my spiritual journey with the Holy Spirit? Where do I begin?”

The Bible gives us a clear answer in John 1:1:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

This verse reminds me of a simple yet profound song I learned as a child:
“Read your Bible and pray every day, and you’ll grow, grow, grow.”

Start with the Word

I believe the Word of God is clear—start with the Word.

Begin reading the Bible. You may start with the book of Genesis, the book of beginnings. But if you find it difficult at first, start with the book of John. Interestingly, John’s Gospel begins with the same phrase as Genesis: “In the beginning.”

I believe the Apostle John intentionally chose this starting point. He wanted to highlight the foundation of all things—the Word of God.

Why Start with the Book of John?

If you are seeking the Lord Jesus Christ, His righteousness, and His kingdom, my personal advice is to start with the Gospel of John.

In this book, you will discover powerful declarations of who Jesus Christ is. While I could list them all here, for now, I want to focus on this truth:

Jesus is the Word made flesh.

John 1:14“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”

If you acknowledge that the Word of God is fully manifested in the person of Jesus Christ, revelation will begin to open for you—a deeper understanding of His wonderful Word. As you read the Bible and seek the Lord in His Word, He will reveal Himself to you.

For Christians Wondering Where to Start

If you are a Christian unsure of where to begin in your faith journey, or if you were once a backslider and now want to start over again, start by reading the Word of God and obeying it.

Don’t run after wonders and miracles—run after the Word. Miracles will follow when you seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness.

Matthew 6:33“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

Encouragement

Starting with the Word will strengthen your faith, renew your mind, and draw you closer to God.

No matter where you are in life, the right place to begin is always with the Word. Read it, meditate on it, and let it transform your heart and mind.

I pray this message blesses you and encourages you to seek the Lord wholeheartedly. Start today—start with the Word!
